Most taxpayers are looking at April 15 as their tax filing deadline unless they request an extension or live in one of the 13 states where the IRS has extended deadlines due to natural disasters.

On Monday, the IRS announced that all residents of Arkansas and Tennessee are eligible for extended deadlines starting April 2 because of recent storms, floods, and tornadoes. Instead of the usual April 15 cutoff, residents in these states now have until November 3, 2025, to file and pay taxes that would otherwise be due earlier.

Earlier this month, the IRS also noted that people in other disaster-hit states and counties may qualify for more time. The agency often extends deadlines for areas affected by natural disasters, as these events can disrupt lives and businesses. For 2025, residents in 13 states may qualify for extra time due to such issues. However, in some cases like Los Angeles County’s devastating wildfires only residents of specific impacted counties are eligible.

The IRS stated, “Taxpayers with an IRS address in a disaster zone automatically receive filing and penalty relief no need to contact the agency.”

If you live outside disaster areas but need more time to file, you can still request an automatic extension, giving you until October 15 to submit your forms. But remember: any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties.
