What Led to NDA’s Landslide Victory ?
Uddhav Thackeray Questions the ‘Vote Tsunami :
Uddhav Thackeray emphasized the difficulties facing the state, pointing to important problems including unemployment and farmers’ plight. He questioned if these concerns had received enough attention to generate the kind of electoral wave that would ensure the NDA such a big win.
Uddhav Thackeray, the leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), expressed skepticism on the Mahayuti alliance’s victory in the “tsunami” of elections. Given that the NDA maintained control of Maharashtra after its strong showing in the state elections, he questioned what the alliance had done specifically to secure such a broad victory.
Speaking to the media, Uddhav thanked the Maharashtra people for their support but raised doubts about the extent of the NDA’s win.
The findings indicate a tsunami rather than merely a wave. However, I don’t understand how they fulfilled this mandate,” he remarked.
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was trailing considerably behind with a lead in about 60 constituencies at the time of reporting, while the NDA was ahead in over 230 seats.
Uddhav questioned how things could change so abruptly in just four months, given the opposition’s performance in the Lok Sabha elections, when the MVA had dealt the BJP a serious blow.
Bringing attention back to the state’s pressing issues, he remarked on the plight of farmers and the issue of unemployment. “Farmers are suffering, and unemployment persists. What did they do to create such a tsunami? I don’t think slogans like ‘Batenge-Katenge’ work,” he said, referring to the BJP’s campaign rhetoric.
Congratulating the NDA on their victory, he added, “I hope they fulfill their promises. The ‘Ladki Behna’ scheme must be implemented properly and not just remain an election gimmick. Farmers’ loans should be repaid, and all other commitments must be met.”
Uddhav expressed his sadness and confusion over the result, saying, “I can’t believe this is the same Maharashtra that stood by me during the challenging COVID-19 period, listening to me as a family head.” But these results show something quite different.
He also highlighted the historical context of the polls, noting that they were held before the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Shiv Sena’s name and symbol dispute.
“Despite having the name and the insignia, elections were still held. We need to understand how this result was attained,” he said.
In response to rumors that Devendra Fadnavis would be considered for the position of chief minister, Uddhav said that given the BJP’s impressive record in the state, one of their own faces might end up in the position.
